What I Have Learned About Weight Loss

I’ve been on a health and weight loss journey for the past year.  In that year I have lost over 30 lbs, gotten off Metformin, a diabetes medication, and gone from not being able to run a block without breaking out into a cold sweat to being able to run 4 miles with no adverse affects.

I have learned a few things along the way.

1.  Be patient.  This is probably the hardest lesson to learn.  We all want instant results.  But I didn’t gain the weight in a day or in a week and I won’t lose it that quickly either.  Nor will you.  There are many fad diets out there.  Juice diets, shake diets intermittent fasting, etc.  They almost always promise quick results.  They almost always cost money and almost always are not worth it.  They may help you lose weight initially but when you come off them if you go back to your old eating habits you’re just going to gain that weight back again.  All I did was join a site called MyFitnessPal.com and log my calories.  Every day.  It sounds like a chore but in truth it just takes a few minutes a day.  It keeps me accountable.  I keep track of what I’m eating.  More important, it works!  And it doesn’t cost me a thing.  It taught me so much about my eating habits and how to keep my eating under control.

2.  A bad day shouldn’t derail you.  We all have bad days where we just want to binge.  If you have a day like that just pick yourself up, dust yourself down and start again tomorrow.

3.  It’s all about calories.  If you burn more calories than you eat you will lose weight.  It’s pure science.  If the weight isn’t coming off there may be a prevalent medical condition that is derailing you.  If you aren’t losing weight but you’re convinced you’re doing everything right get yourself checked out by your doctor.

4.  Weightloss is a simple process.  But it isn’t easy.  It takes determination.  Discipline. Patience.  Have I said that word already.  You will learn.  Patience is key.  But if you want it badly enough you will achieve it.

5.  Dieting is simple.  Keeping the weight off is the challenge.  This is the journey I’m about to embark on.  I’ve lost the weight.  I’m determined to keep it off.  Never go back!

6.  The most effective way to diet is not to go on a diet.  Sound confusing?  How many people do you know who go on a diet?  Then come off the diet and go back to their old eating habits and wonder why they’re gaining weight again?  If it’s your old eating habits that caused you to gain weight then of course you’ll regain the weight if you go back.

7.  The scale can lie!  When we want to lose weight we want to see the number on the scale drop like a stone!  Sometimes we hit a plateau and the scale stubbornly refuses to budge.  Don’t get disheartened and give up.  Look for other signs of success.  Look for NSV’s (non-scale victories).  Even when the number doesn’t drop other things are happening.  Maybe your clothes are fitting better.  Or getting looser.  Maybe your collar bones are starting to pop out, or your hip bones.  Maybe you find yourself able to do things you couldn’t do before.  Walk further or run without getting out of breath.  These are all signs you are on the right track.  Just keep doing everything right and the scale will start to drop again.

Through the past year I have learned a lot about myself.  I have patience and if I want something bad enough I can achieve it.  That’s very empowering.

Keeping Your Resolve

Yes, I know I already posted a blog today but sometimes a topic for a blog comes to you and you just have to get it out there.  So I was thinking, it’s the season of the Resolutioners.  Those people who pack a gym for anything from 2 weeks to 2 months, determined to get healthy.  Then they quickly drop away.  But why do people find it so hard to stick to something that they know will do them good?

The first thing is you just can’t put a date on something like this.  If you decide, probably some time in December, that on January 1st you’re going to lose weight, quit smoking, work out, get a new job, whatever your resolution is, when that date rolls around you’re going to feel obligated to do it.  Because you said you would.  So this new thing comes from a sense of “I have to do it because I said I would.  It doesn’t really come from a sense of I want to do it, even though you probably DID want to do it when you made the resolution.  Basically it quickly becomes a chore.  Something you HAVE to do.  And nobody enjoys doing chores?

Am I right?

My becoming a runner didn’t come from a new years resolution.  I didn’t even plan to become a runner.  It just happened.  The running evolved slowly.   I used to walk laps around a small park just five minutes from home.  Then I began to run the last lap.  Then the last two laps.  Before long I was running more than walking.  By the time I called myself a runner I already had the habit of running.  Now I can just lace up my shoes and go out the door without really thinking about it.  I found I actually like running so keeping it going hasn’t been a chore.

If you’re going to wait for motivation to strike before getting out there and exercising, you’re not going to exercise very often.  Motivation is what gets you started.  But it’s fleeting and unreliable.

HABIT is what keeps you going.  When I started exercising last March it came from necessity.  Being diabetic and having the doctor wanting to put you on a second drug – one that’s strongly linked with causing liver problems – is a great motivator!  I went out to my local park every day, whatever the weather.  No excuses.

Timing is everything!  You can start every January 1st and give up by February or March 1st.  Until one year it clicks.  That one year your desire for change becomes stronger than your force of habit that keeps you doing what you always did.  When that spark happens you become unstoppable.  The doctor wanting to put me on a medication that could cause other serious health issues was a powerful enough spark to get me out of my comfort zone and make me change my habits drastically.  If that hadn’t happened I wonder if I would have lost that weight and started running.

If you’re the type who makes resolutions every year but can’t seem to keep them, you need to change your inner dialog.  Stop telling yourself I HAVE to do this.  Start saying I WANT to do this.  I WILL do this.  When you feel you WANT to do something you will find it much easier to keep it going.  Let’s face it we’ll always prioritize what we want to do over what we have to do.  It’s just human nature.

And look for the little victories.  When you’re trying to lose weight it’s easy to become obsessed with the scale.  If that scale doesn’t budge or, the horror, the scale starts to go up, it’s all too easy to just say “I can’t do this” and quit.  But the scale doesn’t tell the whole story.  People often go through a slight weight gain when they first start exercising.  But it usually comes off pretty quick.  It can be from water weight.  Pay less attention to what the scale tells you and more attention to how your clothes are fitting, or how you look in the mirror.  Clothes start to become loose, you can drop sizes pretty quick.  Your collar bone starts to poke through.  And your hip bones.  Nothing motivates more effectively than seeing success.  I was lucky.  Once I started running the pounds just seemed to fall away.  I went from size 38 jeans to size 32 in about 8 months.  If I didn’t have the success I had, then I can’t say for certain I would have stayed the course.  I became a runner for specific reasons.  To lose weight.  To get fit.  To get off diabetes medication.  The last one I achieved in just two months.  The rest fell into place.  Now I’m a runner for life because I SAW the results and I KNOW what running has done for me.

What running is continuing to do for me.

Whatever your resolution is try to pick something you can enjoy.       Not everyone will enjoy running.  Maybe you like to walk, run, dance, play football, play basketball.  Basically, just move.  Any movement beats sitting on the couch.   Maybe this year you will find your spark.  When that happens you will be unstoppable!

New Year, New Goals!

So 2015 has passed and is one for the record books.  It was a mixed year with a lot of stress and I had to go through eye surgery to remove cataracts twice.  But from a health point of view, other than the eye surgery, it has been a very good year.  We’ve both lost weight and we’ve both gotten much more active.  Now it’s time to ramp it up.

In order to make sure I don’t lose my focus I have set myself a goal of running 700 miles this year.  As someone on Twitter pointed out, it’s the equivalent of me running to Pittsburgh and back!  It’s a daunting number but my runs are starting to get longer now so I know it’s doable.  I’ve already run twice this year.  I ran 6 miles on January 1st, to start the year off right.  And then on the 3rd I ran 8 miles.  So I only have 686 miles to go.

Christine loves working out at the gym.  When she first started going she could only lift 20 lbs.  Now on some of the machines she can lift 90 or even 100 lbs!  I’m going to have to work to keep up with her!  While I also use the weight machines, I spend more time doing cardio, especially the Dreadmill.  For some reason I have a block with that.  I ran 4 miles on it last week and that took everything I had.  I can run further outside than I can on the treadmill.  Maybe it has something to do with boredom.  I need to buy something so I can listen to music while on the treadmill.

I would like to wish all my followers a happy new year.  Thank you for reading and I’m looking forward to sharing my running adventures in 2016.

It’s funny how this blog has evolved from being a business related blog to something that is basically a journal of health and wellness.  I couldn’t be happier that this has happened.

As we prepare to bid adieu to 2015 I can’t help feeling a little sad.  This year has been good to us, and to me personally.  It has been a while since I could say that.  We’ve had a few rough years previously.  But I’ve gone from being on the verge of taking two drugs for my type two diabetes to taking no drugs at all.  My sugar is under control.  Only this morning my fasting sugar was 76.  I owe it mainly to two things.  MyFitnessPal and running.

Running especially has transformed me.  I’ve lost over 30 lbs.  I’m much fitter and happier with the way I look and feel.  When I first started out in March I couldn’t even run a quarter of a mile.  But a few days ago I ran my first 8 mile run.  I still can’t believe I actually ran 8 miles.  It shows my fitness is coming up.

For Christmas I finally got a proper pair of running shoes.   I went with ASICS because I’ve read a lot about them on Twitter and in Runners World magazine and they seem very popular.  I had my first run in them tonight.  A 4 mile run on the treadmill.  They certainly felt much more comfortable than the cheap pair of sneakers I’ve been running in up to now.  I will give my new running shoes their inaugural outdoor run tomorrow.  I have to run 5 miles to reach a new milestone (pun fully intended.)  This will be the first time I hit 50 miles in a single month.  That 8 mile run certainly helped.

It’s also a nice feeling to know I’ve inspired my wife, Christine, on her own journey to health.  She has lost 22 lbs since July and gone down 3 pant sizes.  She is also a demon at the gym.  She’s stronger than she used to be and loves to lift weights.  She’s giving me a run for my money!  Her blood pressure numbers are coming down.  When you have someone who’s on the same journey it makes a huge difference.  We encourage each other.  We push each other when one of us doesn’t feel in the mood to exercise.

So it’s goodbye to 2015 and hello 2016.  I have so many running goals to hit next year.  To keep increasing my distances.  To finally run my first official race.  Maybe to answer the question that keeps lurking at the back of my mind:  Can I really run a marathon?  I have my Twitter followers to thank for that.  I’m following so many people who have run marathons and the way they talk about it makes me want to do it!  It probably won’t happen next year.  Maybe 2017.  Who knows?

Whatever I decide I will be sharing on this blog.  So, again, thank you for following my journey and I look forward to sharing more.

My Fastest And My Longest Runs

I had a pretty good weekend from a running point of view.  Saturday I went for what has become my standard 4 mile run.  My speed is definitely picking up as I ran the first 2 miles at a 9 minute mile pace.  The last two miles were 10 minute mile pace.  So my total run time was just 38 minutes.  Considering I used to take 48 to 50 minutes to run this same distance, that was pretty fast.

Sunday my wife came with me to the same park.  It was meant to be another 4 mile run.  She dropped me off at the entrance and I ran the two miles to my halfway point.  She parked halfway up and then walked up to where I turn around.  I then planned to run back down to the entrance, then walk back up to meet up with her again.  But as I approached the entrance I knew I still had something left in the tank.  I knew I could keep going.  I took a breath for five minutes then turned round and ran back up the course.  I planned to run just one more mile and meet her where she’d parked.  But as the car came into view I wasn’t ready to stop.  So I ran the full two miles again then turned round and ran back 2015-06-28 12.04.47another half mile.  By now I was feeling twinges in my left knee so decided to leave it at 6.5.  The last thing i want now is an injury.  Especially with the holidays fast approaching.  I need to keep running so I  can burn off the extra calories!  So the day after my fastest run I go on my longest run.  I ran 10.5 miles in total.  My legs were pretty stiff after yesterday’s run, but a long soak in the bath sorted that out.  They feel good today.  I may get to the gym later.  If I do I’ll run another 2 or 3 miles on the treadmill.  Or not.

The other great thing about the weekend is the weather was amazing!  Mid 60’s temp on both days.  I was able to run in shorts and a t-shirt in mid December!  I could get used to that sort of winter weather.  Of course, it won’t last.  I have no doubt the cold and snow will be here before we know it.  But it’s good to know I took full advantage of the good weather while it lasted.

MY Health Journey – One Year And Counting

It’s hard to believe that it was a year ago this month I received the final kick up the butt I needed to make healthy changes to my life.  Last December my A1C was 7.2 and the doctor wanted to put me on a second medication to control my diabetes.  As I had already been on Metformin since August 2008, I did not want to take more drugs.  Especially when research showed that drug was strongly linked with causing liver damage.  That was when I knew I had to change my habits.

Fast forward to March 2015 when the weather finally thawed after the frigid winter from hell.  I started walking every day, then began incorporating running into my new regime.  The running built slowly, but now it’s an integral part of my weekly routine.  I try to run at least 3 times a week.  Last month my A1C was 5.5 and I’ve been off Metformin since April.  I still test my fasting sugar almost every day and it’s averaging in the 70’s and 80’s.

My cataract surgery has slowed up my fitness routine as I’m not allowed to lift anything over 20 lbs for two weeks after surgery.  Next Wednesday will be the two week point after my second surgery so I’m planning to go to the gym and begin to lift weights again.  I can’t wait!  (Play on words fully intended!)

It’s always the way.  When you know you can’t do something you want to do it more!  I hadn’t realized how much I’ve come to enjoy lifting weights, but I really miss it.  It makes me push the cardio more.

I lost another pound today.  I’m now 30 lbs lighter than I was when I started this journey in March.  I just want to lose another 5 lbs and really firm up what’s left.  My fitness lifestyle is so ingrained into who I am now that I really miss it when I can’t do any one part of it.  I just wish I’d started this 20 years ago when I started to gain weight.  I can’t change the past.  All I can change is what I do today.  And how I affect tomorrow.  Fitness and health are part of what defines me today.  I know I will never go back to who I was.

Seeing In HD

fire in the skyI decided to share something that I went through recently.  I just had cataract surgery on both eyes.  My right eye three weeks ago and my left eye yesterday.  I keep hearing that at 47 I’m fairly young to need this surgery.  I guess my diabetes has been the main cause, even though it’s under control.  My sugar was high for years before I got it under control.  And that takes a toll.

My right eye was the worst affected.  I think I was about 80 % blind in that eye by the time I had surgery.  When I covered my left eye I could barely see any details.  When I looked at someone’s face with just that one eye all I saw was pretty much an egg.  I saw the oval outline of a face, but I couldn’t see the details; the eyes, the nose, the mouth.  Think about what you see in a car on a humid rainy day when the windshield is all fogged up and all you can see is the vague shape of a car ahead of you.  That’s what I saw through my right eye.  It seemed to affect me really suddenly, deteriorating in just a few months.  The left eye wasn’t nearly as bad, though I had a cataract in that one too.  Things got so bad I had to use reading glasses and a magnifying glass to read a book.

I’ve always had a severe phobia of anyone doing anything to my eyes.  I won’t even wear contact lenses for that reason.  So I dreaded the first surgery, despite being assured it was safe and one of the most common surgeries.  I had to be at the out patient hospital at 6 15 in the morning.  Which was good, because at least I didn’t have it hanging over my head all day.  The worst part of it was the eye drops.  Before you go in for the procedure they give you six eye drops in quick succession.  Then after five minutes another round of the six eye drops and after another five minute break yet another round.  I’ve always hated getting eye drops and the last one of each set stings and burns.  The procedure itself was a breeze after that.  I definitely have no regrets at my decision to have this done.  Though I pretty much didn’t have a real choice.  The surgery happened on a Wednesday morning.  But it wasn’t until the following Sunday that I really appreciated the difference.  I had noticed I was able to sit at the computer and watch television without needing to wear glasses.  But that Sunday morning I went out for my first run since the op.  It was amazing.  As I walked to the park I usually run in, I looked around me and was amazed at how sharp and clear everything was.  And the colors!  The sky was such a vivid shade of blue.  The color of the leaves in the trees.  The detail!  It was as if I’d switched from an analog television to watching in HD!  That whole run was the most amazing experience and I couldn’t help looking around in wonder.   And this was with just ONE good eye!

So I didn’t dread my second procedure yesterday.  I dreaded those bloody eye drops!  They were just as bad as I remembered.  The procedure itself didn’t really worry me.  It’s fast.  It’s simple.  And it’s painless.  For anyone who is thinking of having surgery to remove cataracts I say go for it.  You won’t believe the difference.

I plan to go for my first run since my second procedure on Saturday.  I’m looking forward to that run.  Now I’ll have HD vision in BOTH eyes!

 

An Update

I haven’t blogged for a while.  I’m sorry about that.  I really need to do better.  I have some cool updates to share.

I still run.  I can run four miles now.  I run in a local park.  The scenery is nice and someone was kind enough to mark out the mileage so I can tell exactly how far I’m running.  The other day the temperature was in the low 60’s with a clear blue sky.  I took advantage.  I can’t believe I was able to run outside in shorts and a t shirt in late November and I didn’t even feel the slightest bit cold.  During the second half of my run I happened to glance down.  The sun was behind me casting a shadow ahead of me.  For a moment I wondered who the shadow belonged to as it was so skinny!  Then it dawned on me.  It was my shadow!  This was a great affirmation of how far I’ve come and how much weight I’ve lost.  When you look in the mirror and you’re looking at yourself it can be hard at times to see just how much progress you’ve made.   I swear there are times I look in the mirror and my stomach looks almost the same as it used to look when I was much heavier.  Then there are times I look and I can really see how much I’ve lost. I still have a bit of a belly.  It’s the one thing that’s holding me back.

Why is it the stomach is the first to grow and the last to go?

Weight loss is a funny thing.  It’s a psychological challenge as well as physical.  But seeing my skinny shadow really brought home how well I’m doing.  My legs looked so thin and my sides are so much narrower.  That was a nice moment.

I’ve already blogged about how in December my A1C was 7.2 and then in June it was down to 5.8, the top end of the normal range.  Well last month it was down to 5.5 so I’m well inside normal now.  I’ve now lost 27 lbs since I started in March.  The weight is coming off slower now.  I’m sitting here typing this in size 32 jeans and they fit perfectly.  Just a few weeks ago they were too tight to wear. In March I was in size 40.  That’s quite a drop.  I want to lose another five to ten pounds, while firming my body up.  We both go to a gym and I run outside 3 to 4 times a week.  The challenge is going to be keeping my running going through the winter.

This is my life now.  I really wish I’d started this twenty  years ago when I started to gain weight.  But I can’t change the past.  All I can do is make the necessary changes to ensure my future is as fit and healthy as possible.

Challenge accepted!

Finding Inspiration

You find inspiration in the strangest places, sometimes.

Like tonight.  I was on the treadmill.  I’d already run two miles and I was just starting my third.  My legs were burning but I kept going.  And then Dory popped into my head.  You know Dory.  The fish from Finding Nemo.  The flaky fish that tends to sing things over and over out loud.  There she was swimming back and forth in my mind.  And singing!

“Just keep running.”

“Just keep running.”

“Just keep running.”

And I did.

Somehow that third mile felt easier with Dory cheerleading me on.  I didn’t look at the digital display for a while.  When I did I was already a quarter of a mile into my third mile.

“Just keep running.”

And I did.

Next time I looked at the display I’d run a half mile.  This was going well.

“Just keep running.”

“Just keep running.”

“Just keep running.”

And I did.

The mile passed fairly easily.  So I kept going.

And I did.

For another half mile.  Somehow Dory’s encouraging singing gave me the will to plow on with my run and even made it a little easier.  Now I know what to do when I’m on the treadmill next time.

You Want Me To What???

Suggest to most people that they would get any kind of benefit from running and this is the response you’re most likely to get.

“You want me to what???”

Yet you can derive so many health benefits from running.  You can even get off medication in some cases.

I did.

Last week I went to the doctor for a check up and my A1C was so good he told me I don’t need to take Metformin any more.  Metformin is a drug I have been on since August 2008 to treat type two diabetes.

All I did different was lose some weight from watching my calories and take up running.  Now my heart rate is down, my blood pressure is perfect. 110/70, and my blood sugar is under control.

All because I took up running.

As we get older we seem to develop a serious aversion to running.  We only run when we absolutely have to.  Yet look at children.  Their natural instinct seems to be to run.  They must be really impatient to get to where they want to go.  And sure, they have more energy since they are young.  I know I was the same and I’m willing to bet you were, too.  Running is a natural instinct.  When you’re young you go out and play.  You play sports.  You play tag.

You run.

Then when you become an adult you put away such ‘childish’ pursuits.  You ‘get serious.’  You get a job.  You sit behind a desk all day.  Then you go home, eat dinner, put your feet up and watch television.  For the most part.  After a while your fitness drops because you don’t run.  So when you end up having to run, to catch a bus, to catch up with someone, because you’re running late, you get out of breath.  And you tell yourself you can’t run any more.

Because you’re out of shape.  Because you haven’t run for so long.

Your body is a machine.  You get out of it what you put into it.  If you neglect your car, if you don’t put enough fuel in the tank, your car eventually runs out of gas.  The human body is the same.  If you don’t exercise enough the body weakens, your fitness level begins to decline.  To add to this, the average diet these days  is mostly junk. Fast food.  Fatty foods.  Excess sugar.  As you age, health problems begin to plague you.   You might put this down to getting older.  But aging is only part of the issue.  If you work on your body, the way you might work on your car, you will get more mileage out of it.  You only get one body.  Isn’t it time you looked after it better?

My victory over diabetes didn’t come easy.  And it didn’t come at all until I changed my attitude to myself.  Until I started to look after myself better.  I’m still a work in progress.  I could still improve my diet further.  But I’m active most days now.  I run four or five times a week.  I’ve also started working with weights.  Because I’ve gotten serious now about my health.  Because I’ve come to realize that I only get this one body.   It’s time to start looking after it better.  I read some running magazines.  I read about people running marathons in their 60’s, in their 70’s.  Even in their 80’s.  Those stories are so inspiring.  Those stories happen because those people understand what has finally sunk in to me.  Look after your body and you can have a long and healthy life.

So now I’m off Metformin I intend to stay that way.  Now that I live a healthier lifestyle I have more energy, more vitality.  I get more out of each day.

I’m somebody who couldn’t run half a block to catch a bus without being out of breath and breaking out in a cold sweat.  Now I can run three miles.  I’m not that fast, but I can work on the speed later.  I’m slimmer, fitter, healthier and generally happier.  Running is still not easy but is anything worthwhile ever easy?

I run because I can.

I run to be fit.

I run to keep the weight off.

I run to stay drug free and keep my blood sugar levels under control.

One Foot In Front Of The Other

One foot in front of the other.  That’s a mantra I’ve seen repeated many times in blogs on WordPress and from other runners on Twitter.  I put it to good use today.  After the 80 degree heat on Monday, today was overcast and in the upper 60’s.  Perfect running weather.  So off I went.  I’ve gotten into a routine of running a mile, walking a mile and then running half a mile.  That was my plan for today as I headed for the park.

I started out with a brisk walk for three laps before launching into my run.  The usual heavy legs started to set in around lap three, but I pushed through it.  It didn’t seem as bad today as I settled into lap five, the lap that takes me to a mile.  So I decided to keep going.  I usually run a mile and a halfway with a walking break after the mile marker.  So I figured I could get the mile and a half in one go.  As I headed into lap seven I still felt I had more in the tank so I just went for it.  I’ve never managed to run two whole miles in a single workout before.  I got close once but had to stop running one lap short of the first mile.

Heading into lap 10 I hit The Wall.  My legs just wanted to stop but I pushed on, refusing to come up short this time.  The One Foot In Front Of The Other mantra chanted over and over in my head as I followed word with deed and I completed my first ever two consecutive two mile run.  It was such a good feeling. I managed to complete my two mile run in just 21 minutes.  I’m really pleased with that time.  It shows I pushed myself hard.  I guess my fitness level is coming up.  I’m glad I took advantage of the cooler weather to push myself as I know the 80’s will be back after today and we’re going to a convention next week.  As long as I see progress that will give me the push to maintain my new healthy lifestyle.

When I got home I tested my sugar.  It was 88, a good number.  I love how my body is responding to my healthier lifestyle.  Getting more active is a great way to get diabetes under control.  I really feel upbeat and hopeful that I can get off medication altogether.  That’s my goal.  I’ll find out how close I am to achieving that when I go back to the doctor next month.  Running is part of my life now.

Two words that have the most power to hold us back.  Even more powerful than someone else saying to us, “you can’t.”  Because when someone tells us this it lights a fire in us to prove them wrong.  We don’t accept when someone else tells us what we can and can’t do.  But when we tell ourselves that, it becomes absolute.  We believe it.  So we just don’t do it.  Or even try.  How often do we tell ourselves we can’t do something?  A lot more often than we say we can do something, I’m sure.  We tell ourselves:

“I can’t lose weight.”

“I can’t walk a mile.”

“I can’t run a mile.”

“I can’t give up chocolate.”

“I can’t hike up a mountain..”

“I can’t flap my arms and fly to the moon.”

Okay, that last one is a bit of a gimme.  But the others?  If we really want it we can achieve it.  Sometimes it just seems too hard, or we have tried before and failed.  So we tell ourselves “I can’t”, because it’s just easier than trying.

Or trying again.

But guess what?

“I can’t” is just the cap we put on ourselves until the day we discover we can.

Here are some of the “I can’ts” I told myself in recent months only to prove myself wrong.

“I can’t run more than one lap of this park on one of my walks.

Until the day I ran the first lap and the last lap.

“I can’t run more than two laps of this park on one of my walks.

Until after upping my walk from twelve laps to fifteen, I ran the first, fifth, tenth and last laps.

“I can’t run two laps consecutively.”

Until the day I ran the ninth and tenth laps and then went on to run the fourteenth and fifteenth laps.

“I can’t run a mile.”

Until last Thursday, when I ran my first mile.  And then I did it again today.

After I posted on Facebook on Thursday about running my first mile,  a friend asked me if I had any thoughts on running the New York marathon.  The old me would have immediately thought “I can’t run a marathon!”  But I didn’t even think that.  I’m 47 years old.  I might have thought I’m too old to think about running a marathon.  Except I’ve read a few WordPress blogs from people in their 50’s and 60’s who are writing about their first marathons.  I’m learning to stop telling myself “I can’t,”  I’m realizing that “I can’t” is just a prelude to “I can.”  So, why not think about running a marathon.  I’m not saying I AM going to run a marathon.  I’m a LONG way off being ready for that.  But at least I’m not saying “I can’t.”

Pushing Limits

I have just smashed my personal best. I’m getting more serious about running. I’m even following some blogs about running. I just went for my workout in our local park. I walked the first two laps. Then I ran four laps in a row without slowing. I wanted to do five as five laps in that park is one mile. But I just didn’t have the legs. So I slowed to a walk and walked the next four laps. Then I just went for it. I managed to run the full five laps. That last lap was the hardest ever but I made it. I ran almost two miles. My new personal best!

They say “no pain, no gain.”  Well that last lap was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.  My legs just wanted to stop.  But I pushed through the pain barrier.  That feeling of accomplishment is worth all the discomfort.  And knowing I’m doing this for the sake of my health just makes it all the better.   I’m taking running more seriously now.  I want to push my comfort level and see just what I can achieve.

My fasting sugar this morning was 83.  I had oatmeal and toast for breakfast.  I went for my run two hours after eating.  When I came back my sugar was 88.  My sugar levels are so much better now that I’m active.  For anyone who is diabetic any activity is better than nothing.  From my personal experience the more active you can be the better your sugar levels will respond.  Getting active is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Getting Serious About Fitness

A body in motion stays in motion.

This saying is never more true than when you adopt a new healthy lifestyle.  The more you move the more you want to move.  I go for a long walk and a run every day pretty much.  If I don’t have time to go for my walk then I run up the stairs for ten to fifteen minutes.  Either way I have to move.  I’ve incorporated sit ups and stomach crunches now as well as a routine with free weights.  I always feel so much better after a workout.

After any workout I enjoy a delicious Pro Flex protein shake.  This one is classic vanilla flavour and it’s delicious.  I also take Peak Performance supplements from our Wellness company. These supplements are largely responsible for giving me energy to fuel my running.

Talking of running, yesterday I achieved a personal best.

For the past month or so I’ve been walking and running more or less daily in our local park. I’d upped my session from 12 laps to 15 laps and I’d gone from running 1 lap to 4 laps in total, but never consecutively.

Until yesterday.

I ran the first lap, as usual. Then I walked 3 laps and ran the next lap. Then I walked the next three laps. Then I just went for it. I ran the 9th lap and didn’t stop until I’d run the 10th lap. Yep, for the first time I’ve run two laps consecutively.

But wait, there’s more!

I did it again, running the last two laps in a row. Oh, and I added an extra lap, running the 15th and 16th lap. I’d found out that five laps equal one mile, so I’ve walked over three miles and run over a mile in total! My personal best workout.  My goal is to increase my fitness until I can run all the laps.  It will take time but I know I will get there.

The one thing I do know is this new regime is my life now.  I have a goal to lose another ten pounds.  Once I get there I will work my butt off to make sure I don’t gain that weight back.

Fitness, it’s a lifestyle, not a fad.

I haven’t blogged for quite a while.  I know that is something I need to work on.  My life has been busy these days, but that’s no excuse.

I’ve blogged a lot about how the Attain GC Control Shakes have helped me lower my sugar when it’s high, and that’s still true today.  I drink them every day and they still work wonders.

I joined a site called MyFitnessPal.com and learned a lot about nutrition and exercise from reading their message forums.  I now watch my calories and go for a walk virtually every day.  I even run now!  I can’t run for long at this time, but my fitness level is definitely improving.  Just a year ago if I had to run half a block to catch a bus I would break out in a cold sweat, my heart would be hammering and I would be literally gasping for breath. It would take me ten minutes to return to normal.  Now I can run a lap around our local park, which is probably about two to three blocks in length.  No cold sweats and while my heart rate is elevated, it returns to normal within a few minutes.  I walk fifteen laps of our local park pretty much daily.  I run the first lap, walk three or four laps, run a lap, walk a few, finishing up by running the last lap.

I’ve lost 17 lbs in the space of about six months.  I want to lose about another ten lbs then I will be at a good weight.  But the biggest impact my new lifestyle has had is on my sugar.  I went to the doctor in November.  My A1C was 7.2.  The doctor wanted to put me on another medication.  More drugs.  These ones stronger than the Metformin I’ve been taking since August 2008.

No way.

I have not taken the new drug he wanted to prescribe me.  Instead I looked into what I needed to do to get healthy.  For the past two weeks my fasting sugar has been averaging in the upper 70’s to the low 80’s.  Down from the 120 average I had in November.  I go back to the doctor in June.  I’m really hopeful that my A1C will be drastically lower.  My ultimate hope is it’s down enough for me to be able to get off Metformin.

Actually, I have a confession to make.  I haven’t taken Metformin in nearly two weeks.  I test my fasting sugar daily.  If I start to see a rise in my fasting levels then I will start taking the drug again.  Now I just need to add some form of weight training to my fitness regime.  I know extra muscle helps the body absorb sugar.  I have some free weights at home.  I intend to join a gym soon.

Being diagnosed a diabetic isn’t necessarily a slow death sentence.  There are things you can do to improve your situation.  It’s just a matter of wanting it  enough and being motivated enough to maintain a new healthy lifestyle.  I am determined to get my body back to a healthy weight and keep it there.

The first picture was taken about five years ago when I weighed about 215 lbs.  The second picture was taken a few weeks ago when I weighed about 176 lbs.

With enough will power you can achieve anything.

The Reality Of Home Based Businesses

When you’re looking at starting a home based business you have to use a lot of common sense.  Do your research.  There are a lot of new companies starting up with flashy offers.  New companies start up all the time.  And just as quickly they disappear.  Wake Up Now was the big thing just a few months ago.  They had highly aggressive business practices.

They’re gone now.

A lot of companies have gimmicks designed to lure you in.  They promise you can make $5000 this month.  Some claim to be free to join.  A few will even claim to pay YOU to join!  I guarantee if it costs nothing you won’t make a lot of money from it.  If you make any at all.  The old adage “if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is” was never more appropriate than in this arena.

Thankfully there are genuine companies out there that you can succeed with.  You just need to use a little common sense.

Stop looking for a free lunch.  Most genuine home based businesses are going to cost something to start up.  Obviously some cost more than others and some provide more value.

The genuine opportunities don’t rely on bells and whistles.  They don’t need to.  They know they are a good bet.  Look for a company that’s been around a while.  Most companies that start up fail within the first year.  Many are designed to be that way.

 

If you’re serious about working from home just make sure you do your research.  There are so many scams out there.  But there are real opportunities out there too.

 

A Life In Balance

I created this blog and my Twitter account mainly to promote our home based business.  But my blog seems to have morphed into something bigger.  I have written several blogs about the GC Control shakes that I still drink daily.  They are still doing a great job in lowering my blood sugar level when it’s high.  I’ve been drinking them for a year and a half now. Note, I am not touting the shakes as some sort of miracle cure.  I know diabetics are often targeted by snake oil salesmen offering some form of miracle cure.  But the GC Control shakes are an excellent tool to help you control your blood sugar levels.

Recently I became a vegetarian.  I then quickly moved on to become a vegan.  My reasons are mainly ethical:  As an animal lover I could no longer just I ft to myself eating meat.  I’ve already written blogs that go into this.  But I have noticed that there are plenty of health reasons for making the switch.  I’ve already lost a few pounds and I find I have more energy.

As my blog is called 4 Paths To Wellness I feel this would be a good time to delve into what those four paths are:

1. personal.
2. Physical.
3. Environmental.
4. Financial.

More people these days are looking at their diet and realizing there is a connection between what they eat and how they feel.  The vegan lifestyle is becoming more popular, as evidenced by the growing number of vegan foods that are becoming available in mainstream grocery stores.  I was amazed the other night at the array of vegan options in our local Stop and Shop.  Vegan cheese, butter,  mayonnaise and even ice cream!

Gyms have always been popular.  People want to get in shape.  Obesity has become an epidemic.  Diseases like diabetes are consquently on the rise.  There is a definite need to take care of our health.  We need to take back our Wellness!

Diet and exercise are part of two paths to Wellness.  Personal and physical.  But so many people overlook the third path; environmental.  This can have more of a detrimental impact on our health than we realize.  We don’t pay enough attention to the cleaning products we bring into our homes and use daily.  Products that contain so many harmful chemicals and toxins.  We have a real toxic stew in our homes and we don’t even realize it!  Respiratory illnesses, like asthma, and skin conditions, like eczema, are on the rise.  Most of them are triggered by the chemicals in the store bought cleaning products.  We’re conditioned to go on buying them.  Mainly because everyone else does and because we don’t know any better.

There is another way!

While most people are thinking more about two paths to Wellness, personal and physical, we offer a way to align all four paths and help you to create a life in balance.

I became a vegetarian just under two weeks ago.  I didn’t rush into it.  It wasn’t a spur of the moment decision.  It had been coming for a while.  My conscience had been pricking me.  How can I call myself an animal lover when I eat meat?  I’m sure it’s something many people who call themselves animal lovers wrestle with.  The final kicker came as I was tucking into a burger one night and the stray thought flashed into my mind, “I’m eating a dead cow.”  The burger didn’t taste so good after that, I can tell you.  Two days later, I made the change.
 
I figured I could still eat dairy.  That way I could always select an omelette if we were at a diner that didn’t offer good vegetarian food.  The dairy industry doesn’t harm animals as much as the meat industry, right?
 
Wrong!
 
I discovered the truth when I saw several videos on YouTube.  That changed everything.  Now being a vegetarian wasn’t enough.  The videos showed what really goes on in the meat and dairy industries.  How the cows are milked three times a day.  Far too many times.  Enough times to cause infections.  Enough times to cause the animals great distress.  And when the cow is too old to provide milk, when its been worn out, what is its reward?  Does it get to spend the rest of its life grazing in a pasture?  Does it get retirement?  Nope.  Off it goes to the slaughter house.  The dairy industry has to screw every dollar it can get from its victims.  And the cows are repeatedly impregnated.  When the calf is born, it’s taken from its mother.  Can’t have the calf drinking the profits now, can we?  I’ve heard that cows bellow for days grieving for their young. 
 
And you thought animals don’t have feelings.
 
By the way, that calf?  If it’s male it goes to the slaughter house to become veal.  If it’s female it gets subjected to the same treatment its mother got.  These videos opened my eyes to the truth about the dairy industry. 
 
They also showed what really goes on in a slaughter house.  I saw images I wish I could unsee!  But they did their job.  I would share links.  But most meat eaters probably won’t watch them.  As an experiment I posted a video on facebook about the slaughter of pigs.  I got one comment from a woman who said “I can’t watch this video.  I’m sure it’s heartbreaking.  Meat eating is something I can do only without thinking about how it gets to the plate.”  Thus neatly missing the whole point of my posting the video.
 
Ugh.
 
Sadly all too many meat eaters are like that.  Ignorance is bliss?  Not for all those animals who suffer daily for your meat habit.  I bet if we all had to go out and kill animals for food there’d be a sudden rush of vegetarians overnight.  People want their meat.  But only as long as someone else is willing to do the dirty work.  As long as someone else gets blood on their hands everything is just fine and dandy.
 
When I first became vegetarian I swore to myself it was only my decision.  I wouldn’t preach.  I wouldn’t try to convert anyone.  But the more you know about the meat and dairy industries the harder it becomes to stay silent.  People just don’t realize just how inhuman it all is.  The overwhelming suffering so many animals have to go through every single day.  The fear.  The pain.  .
 
Just so you can enjoy your burger.  Or your bacon and egg sandwich..   
 
Now, it’s easy to dismiss a video.  It’s easy to say this was an extreme example.  That this is the exception, not the rule.  Are you really that naive?  I think people have this image of all food animals living out this wonderful Disney style life where they have lots of room to roam in, all the grass they could want to eat until the day their time comes and they’re led to one side to be killed humanely. 
 
Question.  How exactly do you kill an animal humanely.  If your cat or your dog is really sick, you can take it to a vet and if it’s beyond help you can end its suffering painlessly with a simple injection and it just goes peacefully to sleep and then dies.  A cow or a pig gets hung upside down and gets cut open.  While it’s still very much conscious and squirming and screaming in pain.  I’m sorry, was that too graphic for you?  If what goes on in a slaughterhouse was portrayed in a horror movie there would be an outcry.  It’s too graphic.  It’s too sadistic.  It’s horrifying.  So how come it’s acceptable that something so horrifying goes on day after day?  All over the world.
 
There’s a reason it’s called a slaughterhouse.  Think about it.  There is nothing gentle or humane about it.
 
I’ve only just become a vegan.  So I haven’t had many reactions yet.  But vegans online say a lot of people ask them, “Where do you get your protein?”  Well, there is plenty of protein in vegetables and fruits.  Also in grains, beans, nuts etc.  More than enough.  In fact, most meat eaters get far more protein than is healthy for them pretty much every day.  Plus cholesterol and saturated fat.  Neither of those exist in the natural world.  Studies have actually shown animal protein is the worst form of protein for the human body.  Not to mention the obesity rate is rapidly rising.  People are getting sicker and it’s mainly from their diet.  Since becoming a vegan I feel I have more energy.  I’ve already lost three pounds and I’ve only been vegan a few days.  And a new study suggests that a vegan diet can actually reverse diabetes.  So plenty of reasons to go vegan.  Not so many reasons to eat meat.  Even if you could care less about the welfare of the animals, maybe you care more about your health?   How’s your cholesterol?
 
Antibiotics injected into animals to make them grow bigger.  Pink goo put in your meat to make it look more appetizing.  Frequent meat recalls due to salmonella and other hazards.  I’m glad I don’t have to worry about any of that any more!
 
Some meat eaters argue that we’re top of the food chain, or we have carnivorous teeth designed to eat meat.  As far as being top of the food chain goes, showing compassion to the animal world isn’t high on their list of priorities, clearly.  And, no, we don’t have carnivorous teeth.  Are you referring to those fangs lions and tigers etc have, designed to rip and tear flesh?  Our teeth are more designed to crunch and chew.  Also, true carnivores have a short intestinal tract, so meat can be absorbed and jettisoned more rapidly.  Why?  Well, meat rots quickly.  Herbivores have long intestinal tracts, designed to slowly digest and absorb nutrients from vegetables and plants.  We have long intestinal tracts, just like the herbivores.  Guess what that means?  You have meat rotting in your gut because it doesn’t get jettisoned quickly enough.
 
Enjoy your burger!
 
There is only one true reason people eat meat.  Because it tastes good.  I know.  Remember, I’ve only been vegetarian for less than two weeks.  I remember how good burgers and bacon tasted.  I will never eat them again, though. 
 
Do you think we’re born to eat meat?  Do we have some kind of instinct to eat meat?  When a child is first introduced to a small animal what does it do?  Does it want to pet the animal?  Does it want to play with the animal?  Or does it try to eat the animal?  Hopefully you said no to the last option!  If not, call a psychiatrist!  No, it isn’t our instinct to eat flesh.  We learn to from society.  From our parents.  From everyone around us who eats meat. 
 
Maybe it’s time for a change.
 
You might not have a choice for much longer.  With the world population growing, the demand for meat is starting to grow faster than the ability to supply.  The amount of grain and water required to feed animals prior to their slaughter is extravagant.  Many starving people in the world would have food to eat if that food wasn’t required to feed the animals. More and more forestation is being destroyed to create more land to feed more animals to keep up with the demand.  Even if people cut down their meat consumption to three or four days a week, it would make a huge difference.
 
I know a simple blog won’t change the minds of simple die-hard meat eaters.  The kind who bluster “I don’t care.  Meat good.  I eat meat.”  But if you’re reading this, and if you’ve been thinking of at least cutting back on eating meat, or even giving vegetarianism a try, then let me assure you it’s very easy to live and eat healthy without meat.  The fact you are reading this shows you are on the internet.  Google living as a vegetarian.  Google living as a vegan.  There are so many sites out there with so much information.  Plus there are groups that can support and advise you on making an easy transition to a kinder, more humane way of living.  Some people argue one person can’t make a difference.  And it’s true.  But if one person reached out to one person who reached out to one person….
 
Be that one person.  Start making a difference.  Start today.
 
The animal kingdom will thank you for it.      

Veggie stir fry with eggplant

We had the best dinner tonight.  So good I had to share it.  Well, share it digitally anyway.  Sadly there isn’t enough to go round for all my readers…

We had eggplant stir fry.  The eggplant was a bit of a cheat really.  It was something that had already been prepared.  In place of oil (as we’re trying to keep that to an absolute minimum) we used a can of tomato and basil soup as the base.  We added kale, broccoli, pearl onions, peas, zucchini, chick peas, we added some crumbled veggie burger and some seasonings.  We also added organic brown rice from Trader Joe’s.  Altogether, the meal came together perfectly.  We have a new go to meal.  The whole thing took about half an hour to prep and cook.  Next time I’d love to add mushrooms as I love their flavor. 

The meat eaters can keep their burgers, bacon and hot dogs.  They don’t even begin to compare to meals like this!

My First Vegetarian Victory

I had my first big test last night on my resolve to be vegetarian.  My wife and I went to a block party in Brooklyn.  There were chicken and sausages.  But there was plenty of vegetarian fare too.  My wife has been a vegetarian for over twenty years so the people hosting the party knew to make sure there was plenty of meat free fare to enjoy.  Most of the family didn’t know I’d just become a veggie so they must have been surprised!  So when I went to get my food I looked at the meat and wasn’t even tempted.  In fact I was a little revolted at the idea of eating it.  There was plenty of pasta, eggplant, broccoli etc.  I only needed a plateful.  It seems when you don’t eat meat you get satisfied more easily.  I’m also enjoying not having to put up with that uncomfortable bloated feeling that often comes with eating meat.  Especially red meat. 

I feel more secure and confident in my new vegetarian lifestyle.  Confident that I can maintain this.  Confident that I will never eat meat again.  It’s now over a week since I decided to give up meat.  I don’t miss it at all.  I haven’t had any craving at all for any of the meat I used to consume.  I don’t even miss bacon and I thought I’d miss that most of all.

I’ve also given up dairy milk.  I discovered coconut milk.  It actually tastes better than dairy milk.  I’m looking forward to my first trip to Trader Joe’s as a vegetarian.  I’m going to try vegan cheese and butter.  I’m not sure I’m going to go 100% vegan but I’ll go as close as I can. 

I feel better now I’m not eating meat.  I feel better emotionally.  My conscience is clear knowing no animals have to die for me to eat.  I’ve always been an animal lover.  I no longer felt I could say that and yet continue to eat animal flesh.  I also feel better physically.  I have more energy.  People often think you need to eat meat to get enough protein.  But, in fact, animal protein is actually the worst protein you can have.  Plants have protein.  Nuts and beans have protein.  I also eat a greater variety of food since I gave up meat.  I’m looking forward to experimenting with new dishes.  I’ll be sharing more blogs on my new healthier lifestyle.

Going Vegan?

It’s now five days since I stopped eating meat.  I made my decision Friday night.  Ironically after eating a chicken tikka dinner.  At least my last meat dish was a good one.

I fully expected to miss meat.  Maybe even to crave meat.  After all, I’ve always been fond of a good burger.  Or a bacon and egg sandwich.  But so far, nothing.  Even typing this out didn’t even give me a twinge of regret.  I guess my mind and body are really in sync on this!

It really began last Wednesday.  When , without realizing it at the time, I had my last burger.  It was a Wendy’s Baconater.  I’ve always loved a bacon cheeseburger and Wendy’s are one of my favourites.  Were one of my favourites.  But not any more.  So at least my last meat burger was a good one.  There’s a theme forming here…

Originally I had intended simply giving up meat.  Then I thought ‘I can give up eating cows and pigs, but maybe if I’m at a restaurant that has limited veggie options I can eat chicken.  Them the thought of eating chicken turned my stomach.  And I knew I would never eat meat again.

What I didn’t expect was the thought of going vegan.  It simply seemed too much hassle.  But as I started following people who are vegetarian on Twitter and Google +.  I started seeing all the stuff about dairy farming.  And I wanted no part of that either.  So last night we went to our local Stop and Shop and I bought a carton of So Delicious coconut milk.  I tried it on my cereal this morning and I really liked it!  So now I’ve given up cows milk too.  We have a Trader Joe’s store not far away.  They have a huge variety of vegetarian and, I believe, vegan food.  Maybe I’ll get to try some vegan cheese and butter.  After all, if I’m going to do this, I might as well do it right!

Right?

Not bad for a man who once told his wife she will never get him to go veggie.  She’s been a vegetarian for over twenty years.  I’d made sure she wouldn’t try to get me to change my diet.

I loved my burgers.  And bacon.  And shrimp.  And even while typing this I still don’t feel the slightest urge to go back.  Last night we did our first shop as joint vegetarians.  It was fun and really eye-opening to see all the non-meat food options available in a regular store.  And meat eaters think all we eat is vegetables!

I have my first big test coming this Saturday.  We’re going to a block party.  We went last year.  There will be plenty of meat dishes to try to tempt me.  It’s/mainly Italian food so there will be veggie dishes too.  Pasta.  Eggplant.  But will those meatballs and sausage and chicken dishes try to tempt back to the Dark Side?  I’ll tell you all about it in a blog on Sunday.

Making A Change For The Better

So it’s day three since I decided to become a vegetarian.  This might be the longest I’ve ever gone without meat.  Even when I was sick I would often have chicken soup. 
 
We went out to eat last night, my first restaurant meal since I cut out meat.  I tried eggplant rollatini for the first time and I loved it!  If I’m going to eat like this all the time as a veggie, I won’t even miss meat! 
 
My wife’s favourite food is eggplant parmagiana.  She has been a vegetarian for over 20 years.  I guess we can share when we eat out or taste each other’s meals! 
 
I’ve been reading up on the benefits of various vegetable dishes.  I’m a diabetic and I’ve been reading about how coconut, oats and soy all help regulate blood sugar levels.  So that’s another big reason to stay the course.  I’ve never read about any piece of meat having that sort of benefit.
 
So far I’ve had no cravings for any meat (although I know it’s only been three days and the real test is to come when I’m eating food with other people who are eating meat).  If I do feel any craving then I’ll just remind myself why I made the choice to become vegetarian.  I don’t see any major problem, though.  I simply don’t like the idea of eating meat anymore.  I’ve always been an animal lover and I just can’t live with the idea of an animal having to die so I can eat.  The simple truth is we don’t need to eat meat.  It’s not essential to our diet.  With the choices available to us today we can get all the nutrients we need from eating a vegetarian diet.  Most people eat meat simply because they’re conditioned to, because everyone else does and because it tastes good.  Those reasons are no longer enough to justify to myself any reason to continue eating a creature that had to be killed so I could eat it.
 
 My change came when I was eating a burger several days ago and the thought came into my mind that I’m eating a dead cow.  Suddenly that burger didn’t taste so good anymore.

And We’re Off!

Momentum leads to excitement.

Excitement leads to anticipation.

Anticipation leads to expectation.

Expectation leads to action.

Action leads to results!

Those words came to me a week or so ago.  We’re really starting to see the power in those words.

 

Gathering Momentum

Momentum leads to excitement.

Excitement leads to anticipation.

Anticipation leads to action.

Action leads to results.

Those words came to my head last night.  I know where they came from but this isn’t the blog to discuss that topic.

We’re feeling the momentum.  Business is slow at the moment.  Mainly because we seem to have a million other things clamoring for our attention.  When you have a nine to five type job it’s easy to be productive.  You have set hours.  You show up at a set time, do your work for a set number of hours then go home.

When you work from home it’s equally easy to get distracted.  Family get the idea that because you’re not at a desk in an office you’re available to them whenever they want you.  Plus you have a myriad of personal distractions competing for your time.  Self discipline is critical.  We haven’t fully acquired that, yet.  But we’re getting there.

Last night we were busy setting appointments.  The result is tomorrow we’re meeting with three separate people.  A busy day ahead.  We’re in the business of helping people.  Financially and health wise.  It feels good to be moving in that direction again.  Wish us luck for tomorrow!

We’re beginning to see that momentum.  Excitement is building, leading us to take action.

Now to go get those results!

Spring Into Action

According to the calendar, Spring starts on Thursday.  Although having just been outside it’s hard to believe we haven’t slipped back in time to the middle of January.  The average high right now is supposed to be around 50.  According to my Weatherbug it’s currently 29 degrees.  Only 21 degrees below normal.  In the middle of March.  This has been a long harsh winter.  It’s time for Old Man Winter to get his grumpy butt out of here.  It’s time for some warmth.  At least we’ve missed out on several snow chances this month.  There have been a few snowstorms around, but they’ve all been shunted to the south courtesy of the media flavor of the month, the good old Polar Vortex.  How many times have we heard about the PV this winter.  Way too many times if you ask me.  The PV can bugger off back to its polar home where it belongs.  Bring on the 60’s and 70’s. 

When it gets as cold as this, we tend to hibernate.  I have to admit, I don’t like extreme cold and I don’t like extreme heat.  Am I too fussy?  Just give me 60’s and 70’s, and if we want to head to the beach, some 80’s would be good.  Yes, I admit it, I’m a wimp.  I’m from Britain, where it rarely gets too hot or too cold.  More often than not, the temperature is just right.  Why do I suddenly feel like a character from the Goldilocks fairytale?

Anyway, I have to admit, I could stand to lose a few pounds.  As I’ve already indicated, I hibernate during the winter. And working from home makes it all to easy to hide yourself away.  Thankfully I’ll be able to take advantage of our Vitality range with our company.  We have products that help us have a good workout, that gives us plenty of fiber and products that help us lose weight.  Once we get some decent mild weather we’re going to go walking.  We have an amazing snack bar that is scientifically designed to allow our body to burn excess fat.  And it tastes great!  Bonus! 

So bring on the warm sunny days, when the girls wear fewer clothes and I can get my legs out again.  I’m ready to walk!
